Man of the House 1995 film

A representative from the collections department of the Hermitage told us that after the funeral, Poll was likely cared for by remaining family members at The Hermitage, given that Jackson's adoptive grandchildren referenced the parrot in an 1850 letter. The claim has been repeated on the YouTube account connected to the official museum for Jackson's home, as well as by the cast of "Hamilton"—a musical about the founding fathers of the United States. But it was Poll, his beloved parrot, that allegedly drew unwanted attention at the funeral by swearing like a sailor. According to one post, "President Andrew Jackson taught his pet parrot to curse. The bird was later kicked out of the former president's funeral for swearing during the service, according to one Jackson biographer." Sandy and Jack discuss his moving in, of which eleven-year-old Ben (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) does not approve despite his mother’s reassurance that it’s only a trial period.

Jack goes to apologize, and instead overhears Ben bragging about everything over the phone to his best friend Monroe. Although he is disheartened by this revelation, Jack doesn’t tell Sandy about it and instead seeks advice from fellow stepfather Chet Bronski (George Wendt). He then redoubles his efforts to bond with Ben by improving the Indian Guides. Jack conceals the truth and refuses his boss Bob’s order to transfer to Portland, Oregon so he can redeem himself to go camping. His initial attempts are unsuccessful, and he feels the situation is hopeless.

Joey and his two goons, Murray and Tony, are then discovered in the woods with rifles by Ben planning to kill Jack, and Jack confesses the truth behind his "car trouble" which garners Ben's forgiveness and understanding as he now knows Jack did not intentionally betray his trust like his father. Jack sends the rest of the Indian Guides to the ranger station while he and Ben (who returned to help him) improvise to distract the criminals. Poll's behavior at Jackson's funeral was described in a letter decades after the funeral in the 1921 book, "Andrew Jackson and Early Tennessee History" by S.G.

Drop a comment with your thoughts on his untimely demise below. It’s a fair question, as the character’s last name wasn’t actually revealed until after his death. But if you’ve been watching The Simpsons with any regularity over the past, say, three and a half decades, you’re probably more familiar with the late Mr. Dalrymple than you realize. Feller pointed out that Poll was referenced less after 1837 when Jackson moved home, possibly "because he was then himself living at home and had no need to write to enquire after her." Despite this, "Hit the Road Jack", a song by R&B artist Percy Mayfield, was cleared for release on the soundtrack that, ultimately, never made it to market.

Man of the House is a 1995 American comedy-drama film starring Chevy Chase, Farrah Fawcett, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. The film is about a boy (Thomas) who must come to terms with his potential stepfather (Chase), a well meaning lawyer who is unknowingly the subject of a manhunt by relatives of a man he helped land in prison. It was shot in Los Angeles, California and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Get to know a few of the real people you’ll see in the series, from the Subpostmasters to the corporate executives, and learn about the actors bringing their riveting stories to life. It isn’t every week that The Simpsons kills off a named resident of Springfield, so longtime fans of the Fox comedy are still processing the loss of Larry Dalrymple, who died in the April 21 episode.

After meeting a boy named Norman Bronski at school, Ben feigns interest in joining the Indian Guides – a father-son “tribe” called the Minotauks – with Jack to secretly drive a wedge between them and get rid of him. Despite reluctance, Jack goes along with it at Sandy’s insistence. Neither of them like the club, but Ben manages to effectively humiliate Jack at the meetings. Once it starts interfering with his job, Jack tells Sandy he can no longer be part of it. Ben fakes distress by this and compares it to his father leaving to turn Sandy against her boyfriend.

Herzer was named IHOP's chief executive and chairman in 1983 and began the long process of restructuring IHOP in order to position the restaurant chain as a dominant presence in the family restaurant business. First, the company assessed the financial well-being of each of its restaurant units, ultimately closing the unprofitable ones and beginning a refurbishing program for the rest. Slowly but steadily, the company began remodeling the 88-seat, A-frame units, making way for larger and more contemporary units with twice the seating capacity and a muted decor that was deemed more pleasant for family dining. Unit renovations often also included the implementation of a double-galley kitchen, which consisted of two identical smaller-scale kitchens, one of which could be closed down during slow periods in order to avoid excessive operation expenses. IHOP offers plenty of options for people on gluten-free, vegetarian, diabetes-friendly, and low-carb diets.

IHOP Buttermilk Pancakes Ingredients

The Daily Meal explains that the addition of this secret ingredients means that IHOP's omelettes are going to be fluffier, and that's due to the additional moisture lended to the situation by the batter. It's also going to give the eggs a bit more structure, meaning it's going to fill you up. And last but not least, that batter will provide just a hint of sweetness to the overall flavor of the dish. Omelette purists might turn up their noses, but there's no denying that IHOP's pancake batter makes their iteration of another breakfast staple unique. The addition of fried chicken means this dish provides 1.030 calories, 55g fat, 14g saturated fat, 92g carbohydrates, 23g protein, and 2,080mg sodium. Adding eggs and meat to waffles also adds calories and fat, at least 120 calories for eggs and 60 calories for meat options.

Along with the newly acquired IHOP chain, International Industries franchised many other restaurant and food service concepts, including Copper Penney coffee shops, Love's Wood Pit Barbecue, and the Orange Julius chain. Quick — name your favorite thing to top a stack of hot-off-the-griddle IHOP buttermilk pancakes with. Is it the impossibly light and fluffy scoop of whipped butter that melts effortlessly into the golden brown surface? Or is it the lake of that sweet "old fashioned" syrup you pour generously over the top? In September 2018, IHOP officially joined the beer-makers club (with a little help from brewer Keegan Ales in New York) when they debuted their IHOPS brew. And just like with the chain's omelettes, their famous buttermilk pancake batter was actually infused into the beer — but this wasn't just a plain ol' buttermilk pancake beer.

What's on the Menu at IHOP

Sandwiches, soups, burgers, fried chicken, and other items are available for lunch or dinner. The first International House of Pancakes restaurant opened in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California, under the direction of founder Al Lapin, Jr. After winning over consumers with its affordable pancake breakfasts and numerous flavored syrups, the business quickly expanded into a small chain of restaurants. Weekend patrons were often confronted with lines that stretched all the way out the establishments' doors. A year later, in 1959, the IHOP chain became an operating division of International Industries, a public company that held more than 20 different businesses and was strongly rooted in the franchising concept.

With more side dishes, you'll also be adding more calories, carbohydrates, and sodium to the meal. IHOP's sides offer a varied mix of items to accompany breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Ordering a side that offers a serving of fruit or vegetables can be a tasty way to create a more balanced meal. The classic bowl with bacon has bacon pieces, cheese, hash browns, and eggs scrambled in a bowl. This option provides 850 calories, 63g fat, 22g saturated fat, 30g carbohydrates, 41g protein, and 1,660mg sodium. Choose the fruit side for extra vitamins and fiber for very few calories.

✓ 55+ Grilled Tilapia Dinner

The melts come with the same choice of sides as the burgers do (pancakes, French fries, fresh fruit, or salad). For a nutritious combo, order the 2 x 2 x 2 with two poached eggs, two turkey bacon strips, and two buttermilk pancakes. This plate provides 510 calories, 27g fat, 10g saturated fat, 41g carbohydrates, 25g protein, and 1,630mg sodium.

IHOP does provide information online about which of its menu items contain the top eight food allergens (plus gluten and sulfites), but these are not included on in-person restaurant menus. The chain also cannot guarantee any menu item will be completely free of allergens since all food is prepared in a single kitchen. Keep your meal low-fat by ordering an egg white omelette with zero-fat fresh fruit on the side (rather than a fried item such as hash browns). The grilled tilapia dinner is also a good choice; the 55+ menu version has just 6g fat, while the main menu version has 11g. IHOP's selection of hand-crafted melts includes meat-based sandwiches topped with melted cheese and pressed until toasted. Generally, each item on this part of the menu is a high-sodium option.

“There’s no one on this planet that I have spent more time with and have all of the same memories with growing up than you, and I cherish them all. Kourtney Kardashian looked like she had a very happy birthday celebration for her 45th on Wednesday, April 24. The reality star revealed that she had a birthday breakfast at IHOP on her Instagram Story, reposting a few photos and videos from her friends.

If you're dining in, you can scan a QR code to automatically add the Pancoins to your account. The online registration form also notes that if you enter your birth date, you can receive free PanCoins (and maybe even free pancakes) on your birthday. Once you earn a certain PanCoin amount, you can redeem them for free pancakes, burgers, and more. Each year, IHOP restaurants serve over 700 million pancakes, 20 million pounds of breakfast meats, and over 300 million cups of coffee. The majority of options in this part of the menu are very high in calories, fat, and sodium. These menu items come with a choice of two buttermilk pancakes, French fries, fresh fruit, or a salad as a side. A short stack of the original buttermilk pancakes (3 pancakes) provides 450 calories, 18g fat, 7g saturated fat, 59g carbohydrates, 13g protein, 11g sugar, and 1,560mg sodium. This pancake option is the lowest-calorie item on this part of the menu, and the smaller portion (a full stack has five total pancakes) gives you the sweet treat with fewer calories.

Stewart also set plans in motion in early 2003 to change the company's business model from a company-financed growth platform to a traditional franchise development model. IHOP restaurants began National Pancake Day in 2006 with the mission of raising money for charity. It might be cold and snowy on the Eastern Seaboard, but no matter where you are today, you can warm up with a piping-hot pile of pancakes. But it wasn't just a stack of pancakes — it was a mock-up of a sonogram image, and in the place where you would typically see a fetus in the uterus, instead you saw pancakes, complete with a scoop of whipped butter on top.

While IHOP enjoyed a period of overall growth in sales and earnings, its monthly same store sales results began to falter due to changing consumer demand and heightened competition. To call attention to its non-breakfast offerings, the firm launched an "After Breakfast" menu which included new items such as a southwest chicken fajita salad, a sourdough bacon cheeseburger, and herb-roasted chicken. Shortly after the commencement of unit renovations and the introduction of lunch and dinner items, IHOP began experiencing a steady increase in sales.

How IHOP's New 'International Bank Of Pancakes' Works For Customers

You're probably not pulling up to IHOP with any delusion that you're going to be ordering a superfood kale salad with a side of quinoa and a tall glass of freshly pressed green juice. There's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned diner breakfast — you do you, we say. But while you're aware of the fact that a stack of IHOP's pancakes probably won't ever be considered health food, one thing that might surprise you is just how much sodium they contain.

This year, flapjack dispensary IHOP is celebrating the day by once again giving out stacks of pancakes for free — today and today only.

The partnership between the two companies came on IHOP's 35th anniversary and on Nabisco's 100th, and provided each with an excellent advertising opportunity. The new pancake was supported by television spots featuring Cliff, who promoted the new IHOP product as well as Nabisco's Cream of Wheat. Furthermore, almost 20 million coupons offering a free stack of Country Griddle Cakes with the purchase of an IHOP entree were distributed on Nabisco Cream of Wheat boxes across the country. MSC, Norwegian, and Holland America also include Jamaica on their cruise itineraries. Though the cost of a Jamaica cruise can vary greatly depending on your itinerary, length of trip, cruise line and a number of other factors, there are numerous options to choose from for every budget. The best Jamaica cruises will let you explore adventure-packed experiences.

Immerse in local history at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami during the day followed by the energetic nightlife when planning a short getaway before your vacation. From there, the ship spends another day at sea, one day in Roatán, Honduras, and then a final day at sea en route back to Ocean Cay. Fill your "Perfect Day" chasing adventure at Thrill Waterpark, where you can ride down North America's tallest waterslide, or relaxing in an overwater cabana at Coco Beach Club. The cay is also home to Chill Island, a beach "neighborhood" where you'll find quiet relaxation, cabana rentals, and restaurants. This cruise aboard the Carnival Sunrise departs from Miami for a day at sea before arriving in Grand Cayman.

Take a boat to Stingray City to feed gentle stingrays as you stand in the shallow water, or snorkel over the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, now a thriving artificial reef. Shop for upscale fashions and duty-free goods in George Town, and try tangy conch salad and rich rum cake for lunch. You’ll also visit ports like Cozumel and Grand Cayman, which provide a wonderful contrast of cultures and scenery, with fun in the sun always at the fore. You could also stop at sleepy Bimini or CocoCay in the Bahamas, where you’ll find watersports galore.

Admire the pretty pastel-colored architecture of the capital, and head for De Palm Island to play on the water slides and sip ice-cold rum cocktails. During days ashore, lounge under the shade of a palm tree, snorkel over coral reefs and discover colorful species of fish, and enjoy delicious regional staples like jerk chicken and chilled Red Stripe beer. On board, unwind in luxurious accommodations, enjoy dazzling contemporary entertainment, and savor delicious menus designed by a Michelin-starred chef.

The Viking Star is smaller than most of the cruise ships that call on Jamaica. It accommodates just 930 guests, ensuring top-notch service for everyone on board. There’s no other voyage quite like a cruise to Jamaica, the Caribbean island that’s the birthplace of both reggae music and the legendary musician Bob Marley. When your ship arrives in port, you’ll find reef-lined sandy beaches, soaring mountains, tropical rainforests, and rum cocktails you’ll be daydreaming about for months.

What Is Royal Caribbean's Cruise Compass?

cruise compass

We recently sailed on the Mariner of the Seas for a 2 Night Weekend Bahamas cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida. The Daily Planner is Royal Caribbean’s daily activities schedule, and is delivered each night to your cabin during turn-down service as well as digitally on the Royal Caribbean App app. All the onboard activities for the following day will be listed, such as events, showtimes, drink specials, entertainment, and other things happening around the ship. I love sharing my best cruise tips with you, along with reviews of cruise destinations, shore excursions, cruise ships and cruise lines. Freestyle Travelers is the ultimate resource for cruisers seeking to explore the seas.

Most of the activities listed on the Cruise Compass newsletter will apply on ships in the Voyager Class. These ships include Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, and Navigator of the Seas. Royal Caribbean used to hand out paper copies of the Cruise Compass every night, detailing the next day’s activities. Now, they’re moving towards digital, offering paper copies only if you ask for them. In addition to a listing of everything happening onboard, guests can add specific events directly to their own digital calendar for easy tracking. As you make reservations or add activities directly from the daily Cruise Compass to your calendar, your schedule is automatically updated.

Understanding Your Cruise Compass

Also on Brilliance they had printed off people ship taken pictures for you to look at and buy, complete waste of money, paper and ink. You should be able to use the ships free ‘intranet’ , same portal you connect to use the RCL APP on the ship which is no charge to use. You pay to have access to the internet to stream or surf the web.

Day 7

These are the daily planners (cruise compass) for our 7 day cruise. Please note that unfortunately I did not get the Cruise Compass for embarkation day. For Day 2 I went down to guest services and picked up a printed copy. On Day 3 onwards our cabin steward provided the Cruise Compass in our cabin each evening.

Head down a level to Deck 5 and you'll see the Shore Excursion Desk and Guest Services Desk side by side. On Deck 4, behind R Bar, you'll find the NextCruise office, a small space staffed with sales agents to entice you to book your next cruise before you leave the ship. Besides the theatrical productions onboard Royal’s Vision of the Seas, evening entertainment abounds throughout the ship. Before or after dinner, start out with a round of evening trivia in Schooner Bar, followed by a whirl around the dance floor in the Centrum to tunes from the live band performing there. There are plenty of entertainment options aboard Vision of the Seas. Each night of the cruise features live shows in the 870-person Masquerade Theatre (Decks 5 and 6, forward), from comedians to Broadway-style productions featuring the Royal Caribbean singers and dancers.

Royal Caribbean packs a lot of things to do into each day and you are best served by reading it each evening to be aware of what is happening onboard. On every Royal Caribbean cruise I’ve been on (which is a LOT!), one of the last things I do every evening is to have a quick read-through of the following day’s Cruise Compass. Also, on select ships, your Cruise Compass will be loaded onto the Royal Caribbean International App. This way you can plan your time onboard straight from your mobile device!

Search Should Be Cruising

To help our readers it would be great to be able to show examples of the Cruise Compass from all the ships in Royal Caribbean’s fleet. On our most recent sailing on Wonder of the Seas in September 2023, the app performed well. It was still clumsy though to find certain bits of information. If you prefer a paper copy, simply speak to your Cabin Steward on the first day and and them to deliver a paper copy each day. I can read through the various activities, shows, and events, choosing what interests me the most and ensure I don’t miss anything that important to me.

It lists everything happening on the ship, so you can pick what you like and make sure you don’t miss anything fun or important. Every Royal Caribbean passenger should grab the Cruise Compass. It’s a daily newsletter that tells you about the day’s activities, shows, dining spots, and important news. Royal Caribbean's Royal iQ app is available on select ships and has among its features a digital copy of the Cruise Compass. In terms of activities listed here, they will all be listed again in the full daily planner, which is coming up on additional pages. Page two is usually best for glancing quickly over it for anything that jumps out as interesting.

The first page has an overview of what to expect that day, including where the ship will be (in port or at sea), a weather report, and various specials, offers and events that are highlighted. By far, the weather report in the upper right hand corner is the most useful information on this page. Some events are not repeated while other activities can change daily, so it is in your best interest to track what is happening so you do not miss any of it. Additionally, there's an hour-by-hour schedule of everything happening on the ship, including live performances, children's programming and dining options. Each day's newsletter also includes opening and closing times for all of the ship's facilities, a list of onboard services, medical contacts and information for each port of call, including law enforcement.

It also highlights any special offers or discounts available for dining, drinks, onboard merchandise purchases and even shopping in port. If you have cruised with Royal Caribbean before, you will know that they have the Royal Caribbean App, and this app actually includes details of all the daily activities, venue opening times, etc. Late-night activities are available on sea days, and morning till late night on port days.

From the tranquil moments watching the waves to the adrenaline-pumping adventures on cruises, I’ve experienced the magic of the sea in all its glory. On my last 2 cruises, my cabin steward said that they are told to give Cruise Compasses to  all people over 65. I asked both cabin stewards for a Day 1 Compass AND asked at Guest Services. Ask your cabin steward to leave you one each evening with turn-down service. Note that there are limits to the number of kids who can use Adventure Ocean at one time, and on our cruise, we bumped up against that limit several times. Keep an eye out for regular spa specials offered throughout the cruise (particularly on the first day and port days), and you get a discount if you book three treatments at once.

As the leader in all things related to cruising, our travel blog provides expert guidance and valuable information to enhance the cruising experience. We have earned our position as the top search result for cruising by providing unparalleled resources, insights, and inspiration to our over 1 million readers every year. With 23 sailings, 87 ports of call, 128 days at sea, and voyages across 6 different cruise lines, we have firsthand knowledge and experience to share with fellow cruisers. Each evening, your stateroom attendant will deliver to your stateroom the Cruise Compass, which is a daily guide to the news, events and activities that will be occurring on your ship the next day. These newsletters are a guide to everything that is happening on the cruise each day. The Cruise Compass contains everything passengers need to know, including featured activities, special events, show times and more.

(Paid Wi-Fi isn’t required to do this.) The digital version is in the same format as the paper planners, and you can zoom in and out on the images. The option for paper IS available on many/most of the ships, and will likely return fleetwide when enough people complain about it. The smaller ships are, by default, older ships -- they were built before the technology existed for the wayfinder displays that have been put in the newer/larger ships. At some point in time the displays might be installed in the older/smaller ships... I also don't carry wallet or anything around ship but the card.

The ocean is my first love, but I have another passion that’s close to my heart – sharing my stories. When I’m not on the deck or navigating through the waves, I’m pouring my heart out on my blog. Through my words, I invite you to join me, to feel the ocean breeze, to taste the salty air, and to experience the magic of the sea. IMy love for the ocean isn’t just a hobby; it’s an integral part of who I am.

Yes, the APP is not always correct and this QR copy will be the exact copy of the paper one. Our family sailed on Oasis of the Seas for a 7 day Bahamas and CocoCay itinerary from Cape Liberty in May 2022. The daily activities, shows and opening hours of restaurants and venues are available on the Royal Caribbean App as well as on the daily Cruise Compass. The best cruises to Alaska from Seattle for every type of traveler

best cruise ship to alaska

Grand Princess is a good choice for all passengers – solo, couples and families. There’s plenty to do onboard, and the service is very good, but it’s not a party ship and has quite a relaxed vibe onboard. Expect a premium experience onboard – not quite ultra-luxury cruising, but a step above mainstream cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Carnival Ship Rescues 27 People Adrift at Sea in the Caribbean

Lux ships with Silversea Cruises include shore excursions at each port of call. Butler service and multiple dining options on board create a comfortable atmosphere. These particular ships take between 1,400 and 2,600 passengers, the perfect size to visit some of the less-frequented ports of call. Even though Holland America Line has much larger vessels sailing Alaska, it also has mid-ship options, such as the 1,300-passenger Volendam. If you want that small-ship, luxury cruise experience for your Alaska trip, this is absolutely one of the better ships to choose.

Top Tips for Planning a Cruise to Alaska

Be sure to join my email list for my best cruise tips and handpicked deals each week. A quick note on how I pulled this list together, because there are a couple of important things to clarify. The Millennium offers Edge series staterooms with Infinite Veranda—at the touch of a button, your entire living space becomes the veranda, which means you can walk right out to the water’s edge. And 99% of the staterooms on Celebrity Edge have king-size beds, featuring Celebrity eXhale bedding and Cashmere mattresses. The Celebrity Millennium, launched in 2000, has recently undergone complete modernization, which includes luxury staterooms, enhanced technology, and renovated restaurants and lounges.

Award-Winning Alaska Cruise Ships

All 98 cabins face out (no inside cabins), and 68 of those feature step-out balconies. If you’re looking for something less time consuming than an Arctic excursion, but are still looking for stunning views of glaciers and wildlife, day cruises are a great option for young families and adventurers alike. Starting in 2024, Uncruise Adventures will be offering a winter cruise, where winter sports and northern lights viewings are all part of the package! Running February through March, this is a great option for travelers looking to experience Alaska during the winter months. Many cruise lines also travel to additional locations such as Sitka, Hoonah/Icy Strait Point, and Haines. Programs like Princess Cruises' Cruisetours take the stress out of planning on-shore excursions and curate incredible itineraries for extensive, luxurious travel across the state.

That includes warm days, where even being near a glacier or a passing cloud (or socked-in rain) can make things chilly. Embarking and disembarking in Seattle or Vancouver can make air travel easier and cheaper than one-way Alaska cruises, which require flights to smaller, more expensive airports in Alaska. An Alaska Inside Passage cruise typically lasts seven nights, embarking and returning to Seattle or Vancouver. Luxury cruises to Alaska on smaller ships can be a great option for those looking to pair remote wilderness with a bit of pampering. Your best high-end bets are Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Windstar.

Alaskan Dream Cruises’ itineraries are designed by Alaskans who know their area and are passionate about sharing their state’s natural beauty, history, and culture with guests. Passengers can expect to see glaciers, rainforests, waterfalls, and wildlife such as whales, bears, and eagles. An 18-night Alaskan sailing with the line will take you to off-the beaten-path places like Wrangell, Kodiak, Chignik, Unga Island, St Paul Island, St Matthew Island and Nome. At $10,000 to $13,000 per person for ocean-view cabins on an 18-night sailing it might be out of the reach of some, but if you truly want an expedition to Alaska, Hurtigruten is among the best. MS Roald Amundsen carries 530 guests on its 21,000 gross ton frame and is currently the ship sailing to Alaska for the Norwegian owned company. You can also extend your cruise with some land tours with 5 to 6 extra nights in Denali, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of all things Alaska cruising, keep reading to discover the best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler, featuring expert insight and award-winning picks. Dawn Gabree is a travel advisor who specializes in Alaska cruises at Travels by Danielle. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. There’s plenty to do on board, too, including making use of the two swimming pools, five whirlpools, and Dr. Andrew Weil's spa and wellness program. Not to mention a card room, casino, library, observation bar, and beauty salon.

Sitka

For those looking for a couples retreat, Viking Cruises cater exclusively to adults. The minimum age is 18, and the ship is designed for a luxurious and tranquil experience, so you can truly get away from it all. I could also put UnCruise Adventures in this category but I’m going to add it to the one below as it does something no one else offers. Depending on where you live the embarkation port might determine which cruise line to Alaska is best. After all, every cruise line has their own specialty and caters to a certain kind of traveler. If you’re looking for the best cruise line for Alaska you may not realize just how many choices you have.

Longer sailings from the West Coast

"Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver.

The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go. Glacial ice carved this passageway long ago, and today, cruise ships and fishing vessels thread their way through the islets and channels to see some of the most spectacular natural sights in the world. Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage.

When it comes to longevity, Holland America is the cruise line that tops everyone else. For over 75 years now, Holland America Line has been transporting passengers along Alaska’s coastline and has the awards to prove its commitment to its passengers. Two of the most well-known cruise lines to Alaska are Holland America and Princess Cruises, and we will start with these two lines first.

Finally, you'll find some round-trip San Francisco itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. Discovery Princess is the newest ship on our list of the most popular cruise ships in Alaska, which makes it a tough competitor in the region. Ovation of the Seas sails round-trip from Seattle on seven-night cruises, but the exact itinerary varies by week. The ship cruises Endicott Arm for scenic views of Dawes Glacier and typically visits three Alaska ports and Victoria.

There are 75 cruise ships sailing to Alaska over the next couple of years. The luxury cruise lines are your best bet if you're a couple and enjoy spacious suites, gourmet food, pampering (many luxe lines hire butlers to cater to every passenger) and the opportunity to meet other like-minded cruisers. The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages might also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement.

We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems. They tend to have fewer families – a bonus for a romantic getaway – and a loyal following of regular passengers – a great way to make new friends. Additionally, you may have the option of sailing from larger cities, which translates to money saved on transportation. Stopping along many ports of call through the Inside Passage, their itineraries offer a detailed view of this area of the state, including up-close Zodiac/kayak trips to glaciers. A third excellent option is the destination-focused itineraries aboard select Celebrity Cruises ships.

Then there’s the massive indoor activity zone called the SeaPlex featuring bumper cars, laser tag and even pickle ball. These solo cabins get our vote because they're located in a complex where a private lounge encourages mingling. Lone travelers can also meet their shipmates while waiting to hop into a race care on the ship's go-kart track, at a showing of "Jersey Boys" or over a muddled drink at the Sugarcane Mojito Bar.

10 things to know before you book an Alaska cruise

Before booking a cruise to Alaska, here is what you need to know about picking the perfect Alaska cruise for your family. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly way to spot brown bears, consider a visit to Fortress of the Bear, a bear rescue facility and sanctuary located in Sitka. For only $15, you can visit the sanctuary and learn about how the facility rescues orphaned bears that may otherwise have died in the wild.

What to bring on an Alaska cruise excursion

To ensure you don’t miss out, consider booking a later dinner time, or simply eat dinner elsewhere on the nights the sailaway overlaps with your dining time. The Windjammer buffet can be an excellent place to enjoy dinner in Alaska, as the buffet has floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the venue, in addition to outdoor seating on select ships. One of the best ways to become acquainted with Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships is to watch a full tour of the ship on YouTube. On our YouTube channel, we have full, high definition tours of each Royal Caribbean ship sailing to Alaska.

Depending on your cruise itinerary, you’ll be visiting 3-4 different ports on an Alaska cruise, each of which offers plenty of shore excursions to book. While you can find excursions like whale watching, hiking, and kayaking in several ports, certain ports are better suited for these activities than others. While there is no “best itinerary” for an Alaska cruise, it’s important to have an understanding of what options are available. It’s always a better idea to book excursions as far in advance as possible to ensure you can pay the lowest price and secure a spot on the chance the excursion sells out. Because shore excursions are so popular on an Alaska cruise, it’s not uncommon to see popular tours like whale watching, glacier visits, and helicopter tours sell out.

Book excursions in advance

The caveat is that you cannot see the hotel name and are only given the number of stars and approximate location of the hotel, thus leading to a “blind” booking. As soon as your ship leaves port and enters international waters, the casino will open. Alaska cruises often have a reputation of being for adults, but they can be a wonderful vacation for families with kids, too. Our local Alaska expert Mollie wrote a great piece about where to eat like a local on your Alaska cruise.

While Alaska cruises are famous for providing stunning views, don’t miss the opportunity to learn more about Alaska’s history and culture while visiting the state. In Sitka, consider visiting the Fortress of the Bear, a bear rescue center located near the city center. In Ketchikan, walk around Creek Street for the chance to spot sea otters playing in the creek. When you’re on a bus tour or walking through town, be sure to look up in the trees to see if you can spot any eagles. Another thing you should do on the first day of your Alaska cruise is double check your Main Dining Room preferences. When you booked your cruise, you should have selected a dining time and either Traditional or My Time Dining.

While it isn’t the cheapest laundry service in the world, the convenience of washing clothes midway through the cruise and packing lighter can be worth the cost. As soon as you get onboard, connect to the ship’s wifi and open the Royal Caribbean app (you do not need to purchase a wifi package to access the Royal Caribbean app). Then scroll through the calendar to reserve any entertainment you are interested in. However, it is important to remain flexible and understand that your itinerary can change. Your cruise will stop at a variety of ports in Alaska (with some stopping in Canada as well).

Book the North Star and RipCord by iFLY

Because of their unpredictability, we wouldn’t recommend getting your hopes up about seeing the northern lights. The key to packing for Alaska is to pack layers, as you never know what type of weather conditions you will encounter on your cruise. Both classes of ships also have a thermal suite available at an extra cost, which includes hot stone loungers, saunas, and steam rooms—all of which are perfect for Alaska’s chilly weather. Radiance Class ships have an indoor Solarium for adults, an indoor movie theater, and lounges with floor to ceiling windows looking toward the ocean. Quantum Class ships also have plenty of indoor areas, including an indoor pool for all ages, adults-only indoor Solarium, and indoor sports court.

If you’re visiting smaller ports like Icy Strait Point and Haines, however, we advise researching and booking tours ahead of time. Located on the way to Skagway along the Chilkoot Inlet, Haines is a small port accommodating just one large cruise ship at a time. Kayaking, hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing are all popular activities in Haines. Flightseeing tours can be booked from Haines to visit sights like Glacier Bay, one of the most beautiful glaciers in Alaska. The itineraries of both Radiance-class ships go a bit farther north than the larger ships, allowing both ships time at Hubbard Glacier on at least some of the sailings. On its one-way route, Radiance has two sea days -- the least sea days of all the itineraries.

While it can be tempting to book a full day of fun activities onboard, don’t forget to spend some time relaxing in a comfy chair or on the pool deck to watch the scenery pass by. A Royal Caribbean Cruise Tour will take you to incredible destinations that no cruise ship can visit. From the coastline to the heart of the frontier, a Royal Caribbean Alaska Cruise Tour land and sea package delivers all the must-see sights on land.

The vast majority of cruises are 7-night roundtrip sailings, although one ship will offer one-way cruises to and from Alaska. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Jenna DeLaurentis enjoys exploring new ports of call around the world on a cruise ship, learning about new cultures, discovering beautiful landscapes, and trying diverse cuisine. She loves to get active while at port, whether cycling through mountains in the Caribbean or scuba diving under the sea. This provides enough time to travel to the Inside Passage, visit 3-4 ports in Alaska, and travel back to Seattle.

There are many considerations when choosing an Alaska cruise, but ultimately the decision may come down to budget, convenience, and time. Bringing a waterproof or water-resistant daypack on an Alaska cruise is essential to ensure your electronics, identification, and any other valuables remain protected throughout the excursion. From saloons to historic hiking trails and Ketchikan’s red-light district, you don’t need to travel very far off the ship to spot remnants of the gold rush era. Here’s what you need to know about Alaska cruise excursions before deciding what (and when) to book.

Quantum of the Seas is a large cruise ship, with a capacity of around 4,900 passengers at double capacity. Because of this, she offers an impressive amount of onboard activities, dining options, and entertainment to fit any cruising style. Depending on the month you sail, Alaska cruises can vary greatly in terms of weather, crowds, wildlife viewing opportunities, daylight hours, and cost.

Alaska cruises tend to favor outdoor activities, whether getting active on a hike or taking a relaxing canoe ride down a river. Exploring the state’s mountains, glaciers, trails, and lakes is a fantastic way to spend a day in port, although choosing the best tour to book can be a tough decision. Being flexible on an Alaska cruise is important, especially when it comes to your cruise itinerary. You may end up enjoying the replacement port even more than you would have enjoyed the original itinerary.

One-way Alaska cruises start in Vancouver, British Columbia and travel north to Seward, Alaska (and vice versa). Like other Alaska cruises, these itineraries are 7-nights, but traveling in one direction allows guests to visit four Alaska cruise ports instead of just three. Kayaking is another popular active shore excursion in Alaska, bringing visitors to picturesque destinations along the coastline. Some kayaking excursions allow guests to get close to glaciers and you may even spot wildlife while on the tour. Finally, make sure to book pre-cruise add-ons as soon as possible for a 2024 or 2025 Alaska cruise. From dining packages to shore excursions, it's always better to book in advance before add-ons increase in price or sell out.

It is important to note that the Quantum Class ships have two indoor pools, one for adults and one for all ages. Cruises from Seattle tend to visit the more common ports, such as Juneau and Skagway, whereas cruises that begin in Anchorage or Vancouver get to visit more remote ports. If you have never cruised to Alaska before, you may find the decision of which ship, embarkation port, and itinerary a tough decision.

No matter where in the world your cruise departs from, it is important to arrive to your departure city at least one day prior to the cruise. Flight delays and cancellations, missed connections, traffic, unexpected car issues, and weather can negatively affect your chance of getting to the cruise port on time. Arriving one day ahead of time and staying in a hotel the night before your cruise will give you buffer time in the chance you encounter unexpected delays. Just like any Royal Caribbean cruise, it’s important to pre-book any dining or drink packages for your cruise via Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Planner website.

Get on island time and unwind on some of the best beaches in the world, venture deep into the rainforests, and snorkel the most vibrant reefs on a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise getaway with the whole family. You'll have to head to a public deck to bask in the sunlight or stargaze. Questions about the weather (Is it raining?) or the ship's location (Are we docked yet?) can at least be answered by the cabin TV. The cabins feature plenty of storage space but only have one bathroom. Mom and Dad, consider leaving the bathroom squabbles to the young'uns, and shower at the spa. After her summer season, Wonder returns to Florida to offer year-round sailings in November 2022, when she sails from Port Canaveral.

If you want a budget option for accessing ocean views and watching the world pass by from the comfort of your bed, an outside cabin is your best bet. It all starts with the boldest cruise ships at sea — and ours have won awards for everything from world class dining and spectacular entertainment, to record-setting onboard thrills and groundbreaking innovation. Norwegian's pint-size studios (100 square feet) are found on Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Getaway, Escape, Epic and Pride of America, and they make a big impression for numerous reasons. The staterooms feature funky, multicolor lighting effects and a round window that looks onto the corridor. Each offers a full-size bed and lots of storage you can hog all to yourself. These days, not all inside cabins are the bottom-of-the-barrel inventory.

Inside cabins are the quietest cabins onboard

Whether you cruise multiple times per year or you're new to cruising, the goal of Royal Caribbean Blog is for it to be a useful resource for keeping up to date with what's new and exciting with Royal Caribbean. Whether you are sailing solo or sharing the cabin with someone else, having the beds separated can actually create more space. If you shared a cabin and had the beds split, putting the curtain between the beds might give just enough privacy so you can feel like you have your own space. For a lot of cruisers, that tradeoff is well worth it given the low prices an inside room usually costs. But that doesn't mean there aren't at least a few tricks for maximizing the space.

It sounds like a great technology, but these virtual balconies can’t actually feel real, can they? She enjoyed sprawling each night, and the cruise bed size was an upgrade from her queen-sized bed at home. Cruise lines often use twin-sized beds in their staterooms so passengers can configure their rooms their liking. For example, if Monica or Joey had been traveling with a friend, they would've been able to have the beds separated, so each passenger had their own bed.

The ship's ice skating rink, which is newly named Absolute Zero and has a new oval design, is aft. The Music Hall and Casino Royale is one deck below, and an escape room, Diamond Club elite lounge and comedy club are nearby. We got a no-photos-allowed sneak peek inside the circular space for a very short snippet of the sound and moving wall experience that passengers can expect.

The rooms were located in different parts of the ship, which impacted each reporter's ability to sleep.

Alternatively, sometimes the price difference between an inside room and an oceanview is not too large, and someone may want to upgrade their room option at not a lot of extra cost. There are more balcony cabins than ever on Royal Caribbean's newer ships because the popularity of these rooms has become enormous. Plus, balcony cabins cost more than interior rooms, so it's a win-win for the cruise line and consumer. In fact, private balconies have become so popular that new ships are being built with fewer window rooms. If you want to sail on a new ship and save by booking an outside room instead of a balcony, you may have trouble finding available cabins unless you book early.

This extra space makes it much easier to get around your bed because when the bed is together, you have to move to the walls to get in and out of bed. Rather than purchasing a sunrise alarm clock, a no-cost hack is to leave your cabin TV on and tuned to the channel that has a view from the ship's bridge. Since you have no windows in your cabin, it's hard to know when you wake up on your own if it's 3am or 3pm. If you're like me, opening your eyes to check what time it is can be a dangerous game because you might end up waking up too much and find it difficult to go back to sleep. No matter which 7-day cruise to Europe you end up booking, here's how to plan a European vacation that's high on adventure with low added stress. A Barcelona vacation is always a good idea, but arriving at this iconic port of call by sea is a truly unique experience.

Among the line's most spectacular suites are the Royal Loft Suites on some of the newer Royal Caribbean vessels. Two decks high, they offer a soaring living room space framed by a glass wall that offers stunning views. A few Royal Caribbean ships have balcony cabins that face toward the vessel's center, not toward the outside. It results from an unusual design feature of one series of Royal Caribbean ships, the Oasis class. The reason to consider an oceanview room is if a view is important to you, but the price of a higher-category stateroom is not possible.

On the line's five Oasis-class ships, which began debuting in 2009, around 65% of rooms are balcony cabins. On the line's even-newer Quantum-class ships, which began debuting in 2014, the percentage is even higher — around 69%. On Royal Caribbean ships, these rooms are almost always the least-expensive option when booking a cabin.

Each of these bigger ocean-view cabins has two twin beds that can convert into a royal king bed, one double sofa bed and either one Pullman bed and one twin bed or two Pullman beds. These windowless cabins are usually the cheapest option onboard, making inside rooms a great option for those cruising on a budget. Many guests who book interior rooms choose to spend money elsewhere during their vacation, such as on drink packages or exciting shore excursions. Keep in mind that windows on cruise ship cabins do not open, so there's no opportunity to get any breeze of the fresh ocean air.

Minimizing the gap in time between when the image was shot and when it’s viewed in the stateroom also plays a crucial role in minimizing any chance of seasickness. Keeping the latency, or difference in time between when the camera captures the image and when it appears on the screen, under three seconds was essential. “We realized during testing that movement of the horizon was a key contributing factor in seasickness. So, we have leveraged a wide angle lens to minimize horizon movement,” said Farzad.
